Neurological Rehabilitation

Neurological conditions affect the mobility, function, and quality of life. The nervous system consists of brain, spinal cord and an array of nerves which control and regulate the body. Any impairment in the working of the nervous system may result in long-term problems which can be traumatic for the person and families.

Getting a neurological condition in any age can affect various aspects of a person’s life and pose new challenges. Neurorehabilitation needs a skilled neuro-Physiotherapist to enable patient to reach the optimum level of function and mobility.

What is neurological rehabilitation?

Neurological rehabilitation is a multi-disciplinary treatment provided to restore function in persons having conditions caused due to impairment or injury of brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Our multidisciplinary team consists of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language therapists and rehabilitation assistants.

What is the role of Physiotherapists in neuro-rehabilitation?

Neuro-Physiotherapists specialise in the assessment and treatment of neurological conditions, which may affect a person’s mobility, transfers, swallowing, speech, memory, mood problems and sensations. A neuro-physiotherapist is trained to do detailed neurological examination and develop goal-orientated rehabilitation plan central to a person’s needs. The goal of Physiotherapy input is aimed at promoting neuroplasticity which means development of new pathways in brain by repetitive task-orientated approaches to learn new skills. The therapeutic input helps in improving mobility, muscle strength, range of motion, balance, and co-ordination. The idea is to transfer the skills enabling independence in activities of daily living and ultimately improving the quality of life.

How does it work?

As the name suggests, we are home Physio company. You don’t have to come to us, we come to you in the comfort of your own home. In the first home visit, detailed assessment will be completed by our specialist neuro-physiotherapist to identify the deficits and form a rehabilitation plan with long and short-term goals in collaboration with the person affected, carers and families. Based on the assessment, the neuro-physio will make recommendations about the level of treatment required. We also liaise with our multi-disciplinary team of occupational therapists, speech and language therapist and rehabilitation assistants. Externally, we may need to liaise with your GP, neurologist, care provider or care home to provide a holistic service.

How soon should neuro-rehabilitation start?

Neuro-rehabilitation should start as soon as possible to prevent further deterioration. There is risk of developing contractures, stiffness, spasticity and difficulty with balance and mobility. NICE guidelines state that early Physiotherapy helps in relearning vital abilities and long-term rehabilitation prevents risk of further strokes.
